Welsh Witch’s Tips on Connecting to Nature This Year

This time of year is symbolic of rebirth, growth and blooming after the darkness of winter. The philosophy of the Wild Moon Distillery is deep-rooted in the cyclical nature of seasons and honouring as such.

A lot of paganism focuses on the sacredness and interconnectivity of nature and our relationship to it. Honouring nature is one of the key aspects of witchcraft, as well as adapting to and appreciating the cyclic magic of the seasons. The Welsh Witch believes everybody has the power to become more attuned with the seasons and nature’s abundance. This, in our busy societal ways, has become more important than ever in order to decompress and look after ourselves.

Let’s have a look at some of the ways you can connect to nature, slow down and live with the seasons:

1. Get outdoors

Yes, it really is as simple as that. A lot of us spend many of our evenings indoors, cosy and warm after the cold, dark winter. Which is lovely, but as the weather starts to get a little nicer, the mornings brighter and evenings lighter, reconnecting with nature this spring is a great way to be grounded and in tune with your surroundings. Try out a morning walk or watching the sunset in the evenings, even if it’s just for a short while. It’ll help your circadian rhythm too, meaning you might even sleep better because of it.

2. Eat seasonally

This time of year has traditionally been the time where the supplies are running low after stocking up on foods for the winter, with preservation methods such as pickling and salting. Today, though, all we have to do is nip down to the freezer section of the supermarket and we have every vegetable from every country at our disposal, seasons irrelevant. Our society has massively lost touch with eating seasonally, so if you can, check out what is in season, support local growers or even forage yourself! As we reach the whisperings of spring, this time of year is great for foraging wild garlic, which works great in a pesto or salad

3. Learn about the moon phases

Here at the Wild Moon Distillery, we’re a big fan of our majestic moon – we fully believe that the lunar phases directly affect us down here. This is because of the increased energy, the bright light of during the full moon causing ‘lunarsomnia’ (when you can’t sleep due to the intense brightness and energy), the waxing and waning pulling us in and out of phases of fatigue and energy, reminding us of the cyclical processes necessary for progress. We have lots of resources on the moon, using the moon’s energy and lunar phases here on the Wild Moon blog, if you’d like to learn more.

Welsh Witch Craft Spirits use seasonal ingredients to honour the cyclical seasonality the Earth has to offer us. Living in harmony with nature is at the core of what we do, which is why we let our botanical spirits mature over a full lunar cycle.

We also believe that living in synchronicity with nature is a key to holistic and happy living, as our lifestyles are supposed to wax and wane with the seasons. It is hard for us to be mentally stimulated with technology and busy working schedules; that is why a great deal of people struggle during the dark winter months. When humans lived intuitively with nature, more importance was put on resting and slowing down during winter, but our society today does not take account of our innate need for cycles.

So next time you’re feeling a little out of sorts, take stock of the season you’re in, look at what nature is doing, and approach things with more forgiveness, grace and patience. With spring just around the corner, let this be a time filled with rebirth, new ideas and opportunities, and coming into bloom.
